Burt,

I didn't want to run in the heat of the day. It was in the low 80's and I didn't get a chance to run until the afternoon.

Kelli,

It is pretty fun. It is on WII sports resort. My favorite is the 3 point basketball contest. I hold the record at my house, 26 points. It is driving my husband crazy. He keeps trying to beat me but can only get 25. :)

They always let me tell them when I can go and they work their schedules around when my baby needs to eat. It has been awesome. I am looking forward to being able to run in the morning again. Holy cow girl! 10 miles!! NICE JOB!!! Hey, I am doing Ragnar this year too!! We need to talk about our start times and see if there is a chance we could see each other!!! Good luck with the training, you are doing AWESOME!!!!

From Britta on Mon, Feb 28, 2011 at 17:04:37 from 99.61.115.3

Kellie, I wish we could see each other but I am assuming we are not doing the same Ragnar. I am doing one in 6 weeks. It is from Huntington Beach to Coronado Island.

So exciting that you are do in a mere 4 weeks. Do what you can to get that little one here earlier! Crazy enough my first 3 were early and my last one was 3 days late induced! Do you have a name for your princess yet?

From kellies on Fri, Mar 04, 2011 at 20:16:44 from 63.248.32.71

Silly me!! 1. I am sorry that I am just now responding to your comment about Ragnar from Monday 2.Ummm yah, I am doing Wasatch Back this year. I guess it might be high time for me to realize that Ragnar is Nationwide now and so chances of a person referring to the same RAGNAR that I am running are slim to none, silly me, ha ha!!! Sorry bout that:)

Oh, I sure hope I have this little girl early!! Your comment scared me a bit. I had my 2nd son 2 weeks early and my 3rd 1 week early so I am hoping for at least a little bit early but watch.......I will jinx myself and go overdue, that'd be my luck. I keep saying if I haven't had her in the next 2 weeks I am going for a 10 mile run but we all know that's not going to happen, I can barely run 2 miles at this point:)! We do not have an official name yet. Several that we like but we are one of those silly couples that has to see the baby before we can decide what to name her (not sure why as my babies never look like a specific name to me at birth). Oh the suspense. I just can't wait to see her!!!

From Britta on Sun, Mar 06, 2011 at 20:03:55 from 99.61.115.3

I was seriously depressed every day my little one didn't come because all my others were 6,10 and 17 days early. Who would think I would go over!! Now that it is over I regret even being induced. I wish I would of let her come on her own. Oh well. This is so silly for me to say.. but try to enjoy your last weeks. Every time someone said that to me I would roll my eyes but now I miss it.

Don't you love their birthday too? I love meeting them for the first time. SO SUPER EXCITING!!! I am getting so excited for you just sitting here typing!!! Yeah for the Kellie and Tyler!!!

Please tell me you have headbands and big bows and cute little braclets to dress her up with!!?

From kellies on Tue, Mar 08, 2011 at 00:56:34 from 63.248.32.71

OH Britta, you are sweet and we sound so much alike! I always have the hardest time the last few weeks of pregnancy and then about 3 weeks after.....miss it! I am contradictive that way!! I really am trying to enjoy these last weeks though because this is most likely my last baby (about 99% most likely) so it will be the last few weeks of pregnancy for me, forever. That is a bit bitter sweet to think about! I need to tell myself that as I lay awake in the middle of the night because my hips are throbbing so bad I can't sleep:). Ha ha!!! And Yes, their Birthday is the BEST EVER! I love the whole hospital experience!!! Nothing like it in the world! I was induced with my first but then went into labor with my 2nd and 3rd. I agree that I will wait to go into labor with this one, I do not want to be induced so hopefully she will work with me and come a bit early or at least by her due date:)! Thank you for your excitement for us! So cute! I can hardly stand it myself. I have bought a few headbands but not any bracelets yet (I better get on that ha?). My friends are throwing me a shower this Thursday so I am excited to see how that goes and if I get some fun stuff! See, another area of FUN STUFF!!! Babies are great!!! I feel spoiled!!

Running at an easy pace has been pretty nice. I think I will start adding in speed work after Ragnar. My day started at 4:30 AM and basically I didn't sleep again until 10 PM Saturday night. I was completley exhausted to get up  for 9 AM church but it was so worth it.

A few things I think about this mile... I could have run faster if it was on an actual track and I also could of run faster if it wasn't 80 degrees when I ran it. Still I am happy with 6:26 just think I could have run it 10-15 seconds faster in different conditions.

Jackie came over and we did a Jillian Micheals workout that we got out of a magazine. It was tough. Especially with the interuptions of the 4 of our 8 children who were with us.

I decided I am going to start posting my weight again for myself. It is finally not at an embarassing number following the birth of my angel. Still it needs to come down a bit. I would like to be around 125 for SGM. Not sure if that is possible for my body while I am breastfeeding but we shall see.

I'm not sure how I feel about the race. In a nut shell I didn't feel great but I didn't feel terrible... just a little off. I had to stop to use the bathroom which is always annoying. I went inro the race knowing I wasn't prepared to run a PR but I did want to run strong and feel good. I ran just OK. The last 4 miles were torcher!! I had to talk myself through every step. I wanted to walk so bad but didn't so I guess that is a bonus. This was good mental preparation for the marathon.

 Splits 8:38, 8:20, 8:03, 8:27, 8:20, 7:53, 7:54, 8:10, 8:22, 8:44, 9:17, 8:40, 9:07

I stopped to go to the bathroom around mile 5.5 so you can see for  2-3 miles afterwards I was trying to make up some time but then I just burned out at the end. Oh well... live and learn.

You just have to do your best. If they beat you, you just humble yourself and congratulate them. One time I did a half marathon in Payson with Camille from the blog. I SOOO didn't want her to beat me. But I crashed so hard after this major hill. I had a good lead on her so from then on it was just - don't let Camille pass you. Don't let Camille pass you. I ended up beating her by only a minute and it was the worst time on a half marathon I've ever had.

From Britta on Wed, Jul 27, 2011 at 13:30:20 from 99.186.205.233

It is not her I am concerned about really it is just if she beats me everyone will have something to say about it.(Ward people, her husband and friends) I should be flatter that I am the measuring stick but it feels like a lot of pressure right now. YOu are totally right though I can't really worry about her and I truly do want her to run her best! Thanks for the advice burt it actually was helpful :)

From Burt on Wed, Jul 27, 2011 at 13:42:40 from 206.19.214.144

You're welcome. Here's another story. You know how I go running sometimes in Las Sendas Thursday nights? Well, one of the gals I run with, Liz, is now in my old ward. So it's fun to talk to her and see how everyone is doing. Anyway, there was another lady in my ward that would always win the stake Turkey Trot. So, the bishop was telling everyone how she was going to win and blah blah blah. Well, of course Liz ended up winning which shut the bishop up. And Liz felt bad because she beat the lady that was "supposed" to win. I told her not to worry about it because for two years after I moved out of the stake I came back and ran the turkey trot and won it both times.

It's cool that your brother's back. He sounds hunky.

That's a really nice average pace there Britta. Looking good.

From Britta on Fri, Sep 02, 2011 at 13:41:53 from 99.101.128.14

Cal,

I feel like I could have done maybe 10 miles at the pace. It would have been hard but could have done it. Knowing that what do you think about my marathon goal pace as 8:10? Secretly or not so secretly I keep thinking about 3:29 instead of 3:35 In your experience what do I need to be able to do in trainig in order to hit a certain pace in the marathon?

From Calvin on Fri, Sep 02, 2011 at 13:57:39 from 209.23.216.3

If you could hold those paces for 10 miles, then its probably within a few seconds of 1/2 marathon pace, which should be maybe 15-20 seconds per mile faster than your full marathon pace (on similar terrain).

Given the somewhat downhill nature of St. George, i think you're right there in the 3:29 to 3:35 range.

From Britta on Fri, Sep 02, 2011 at 19:03:26 from 99.101.128.14

The course I ran was almost completley flat so I am really hoping I can pull 3:29. That would be soooo exciting. I am getting nervous... we will see if I have what it takes.

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesCrosstraining milesTotal Miles
0.000.0026.200.000.0026.20

So Happy!!!! The whole week before the marathon I spent so much time analyzing what was the right way to run the race to be succesful. I was so mentally exhausted by Thurs afternoon that I wanted to scream. I came to the conclusion... I am doing this for fun and I am sucking all the fun out of it. I have trained really well and really smart so come race day I will just let the chips fall where they may and hope for the best. As you all know there are plenty of things out of are control on race day and we all spend too much time worrying about what we can't change....weather, sickness, time of the month (sorry men), etc.

Thankfully my baby weened herself from breast feeding a week before the race so I didn't have to worry about bringing a breast pump....so one thing I got to check of my worry list. (again sorry men) :)

Race Morning... woke at 3:45 AM read, prayed, dressed, potty, ate banana with Peanut Butter and a asiago cheese bagel only took a sip of water because I have a loose bladder. :) I made sure to drink at least 8 glasses of water everyday of the week leading up to race day to insure I was well hydrated.

Rode bussed with Ana, Jackie, Flory, Joe and friend. Got to start line around 6:10 and went straight to the bathroom line. Jackie, Ana, Flory, Joe, and I were the last ones to make it into POP before gun went off. Crossed start line about 4 min behind.

The only miles I told myself I would pay attention to my watch were the first 3 to make sure I did not go out too fast. I felt really calm and really prepared. The two things I told myself over and over durning the first 14 miles were "Conserve" and "Trust in the Lord with all thy might mind and strength." I knew I needed to make it to mile 14 feeling great and having plenty of energy so I held back and made sure I ran comfortable the whole way. I knew miles 8-12 could be slower because they were an uphill grade so I didn't panic when my splits were slower. I honestly didn't take mental notes at each mile because I was just enjoying the race and focused on keeping myself calm and focused.

Just before each water stop I took two energy chews and then drank a gatorade and a water at each stop. I did this till mile 15 and then I took 3 energy chews at this mile. I had a hard time getting them down. I kept burping and almost throwing them up. My stomach was feeling off and then my heart starting raceing and it scared my for a minute. I calmed myself down and I slowed down and took it easy till I felt okay. I also decided that I would not take the energy chews any longer. They had caffeine in them so I was worried they were affecting my heart. I did train with them though and never reacted this way. I was worried about not eating anything from 15 on but I felt it was a better choice then chancing me puking or having a problem with my heart. At each water stop after this I drank two glasses of gatorade for the calories and one glass of water. I dumped water on me a couple of times just to avoid getting hot but don't remember which miles. At mile 19 I started getting goose bumps and I felt myself start panicing thinking my body was going into shock. Again I calmed myself down and slowed a bit too make sure everything was OK.

I truly felt good this whole race. I can't say I felt that it was my best running day physically but it was definatley a great mental running day. I was able to keep things in perspective and not panic. I ran comfortable the whole time and really enjoyed the experience. Having said that it makes me wonder if I could have run faster but again at what cost? I may have crossed the finish line delirious or may have pushed too hard and ended up walking at the end. Who knows.. all I know is I PR'd by 11 min and enjoyed every step of the way.

In reading others blogs so many people felt affected by the heat but I honestly was not hot the entire race. I was wearing a hat and I also wonder if I was better contioned for the heat since I live in CA.

My boston time for 2013 needs to be 3:35:00 so I am 5 seconds over which is ridiculous but I did qualify 2012 needing a 3:40. Too bad it is already full. Although, I do feel that too many of us use Boston as our measurment for success and don't enjoy the journey. I am enjoying the success of this race... boston or not.

My legs are SUPER sore and I am really not enjoying walking like and old woman. I am enjoying the piggy back rides up the stairs from my husband!!! :)

Splits 8:16, 8:13, 8:02, 7:35, 7:50, 7:34, 7:36, 8:42 (veyo), 8:25, 8:37, 8:38, 8:21, 8:02, 8:18, 7:49, 7:48, 8:10, 8:11, 8:17, 8:21, 7:56, 8:30, 8:29, 7:52, 7:41, 8:52, my watch ended at 26.37 so I am not really sure what the .2 is since it seems that I ran .37 :)

The thing I kept telling myself is something Jackie said to me in St. George  "You are faster (or Stronger, I can't remember) than you think you are." Jackie has so much confidence in my ability as a runner. That really helped me to have confidence in myself for this run. :)

I finished this race saying that I hated it and didn't want to run another marathon for a long time. The next morning I woke thinking that I wanted to run it again...Aren't we runners silly!

I ran this marathon to support Jackie. We trained for and ran St. George marathon just a few weeks ago. Unfortunatley Jackie was puking the last 8 miles and wanted a do over. Orginally I was just going to come to Santa Barbara and cheer for her but then I figured I might as well get another marathon under my belt and a bit more experience. I am happy I ran it and feel like each marathon I have run whether good or bad I always learn something important for the next one.

I had to talk myself through almost every mile and seriously considered walking the last 7. Jackie turned to me at mile 2 and said this feels easier than St. George and I was thinking and said "not to me".  Jackie and I ran only the first 5 together and then she got caught in the 3:30 pace group and I backed off. She slowed a bit and I caught up to her around 11 I think but we only ran together for maybe another 1/4 mile. She started to speed up and I wasn't feeling it. I could see her till about mile 19.5 where I took a walk break and lost sight of her.

Okay so onto the mile break downs.

1-7 Feeling okay not great but also thinking I was going to give it what I had for the day so just kept on. Splits 8:06, 7:49, 7:48, 8:03, 7:46, 8:10, 8:10

8-12 Still feeling about the same. Our mom's were waiting for us at mile 9 with fuel. It was nice to see them. Splits 8:18, 7:54, 7:57, 8:31, 8:24

13-18 Mental torcher. I was thinking just hang on till 18 where I knew my mom was waiting again with more fuel. We ran along a trail for most of these miles and I thought I hated it but thinking back had I not mentally been struggling these miles would have been really fun. I really kept expecting to feel okay "the next mile" but it just didn't happen this race. I also was running near a guy that would not let me pass him. Every time he saw me over his shoulder he would speed up just enough so I couldn't pass him. At water stops I would end up passing him but then he would always take the lead again. Splits 8:22, 8:25, 8:20, 8:38, 8:35, 8:29

19- I felt a bit of a pick me up at this mile and I decided I was going to go for it and see what I could do. 8:19

20-26.2 Don't know what happened but my pick me up back fired. I started having knee trouble. I could barely bend my right knee. I had to walk about a quarte mile and then every time I tried to pick up the pace just a little it would stiffen again so I really had to take it easy. This is where I started toying with the idea of walk running till the end but then new I would be dissapointed if I didn't do my best for the circumstances. There was a water stop every mile so I told myself no walking excpet through the water and that seemed to really help me to be able to take a quick breather at every mile.  Mile 23-24 was crazy!!! There was the biggest hill of the whole race which was about a half mile long and the wind was blowing soooo hard. I ran the whole thing but every time I looked at my watch I was running over an 11 min mile.. just couldn't go any faster. I ran past the guy who wouldn't let me pass him earlier on and I thought he would do the same thing again but.... I beat the sucker. That's what you get for thinking you are better than a girl!! :) The last two miles I was singing the songs that were playing on my ipod out loud and it felt GOOD! I loved looking a bit crazy because I sure felt a bit crazy at this point. Splits 10:06, 9:16, 9:33, 9:28, 10:14(hill), 8:43, 8:48, 3:16 Watch read 26.40.

Now that I have had time to reflect on this race I really want to run it again. I thought I hated the course but I think I really actually like it. It was a pretty flat course and I think I might have been able to run it faster than St. George if I had more time in between.I also thought that I hated that it was a smaller marathon but I think I enjoyed that it was a different experience. I want to run it on fresh legs and not 6 weeks after a previous marathon but I will always run the St. George marathon so that will probably never happen.

So happy I ran this marathon even though it was rough. I am so proud of myself for being mentally tough and I am so happy that Jackie ran a good time... she ran 3:40:04. So proud of her!!!

Pretty strong finish for the last few miles. It's hard to pick up the pace again once you feel like it's gone.

ODE to ANA and BRITTA's AWESOMENESS.

We passed two men runners today and they were not old or fat. I did feel a little bad when we saw the look on the first guys face. He seemed to be thinking "is this really happening?"

Our pace is naturally coming down which is exciting. I am so happy to have found running friends who are committed to putting the miles in. This would be a lot less fun on my own. Love to Ana and Jackie.. you girls are the best.

Miles two and  three I am figuring would have been about 7-10 seconds faster each but jackie was not feeling well so I did some waiting for her and running back to her to check on her. My tempo pace seems to be right around 7:15 right now. Which is great I can see the improvement. I would love to average 7:30 for SGM 2012 so I am trying to keep on my speed work and keep the miles up.
