He is also very active, mostly weight training and he has run 2 half marathons as well. He is very fast without training too hard. 1:28 Half Marathon!!! I am working on being able to keep up with him. Someday when are kids are older we look forward to training together.

I almost forgot my username and password!!! I obviously haven't been using this blog enough. I have been running just not recording. I took 3 weeks off just after christmas because I had to have a minor surgery. Everthings fine. Other than that I have been running but not very seriously... mostly just fiddle farting around.

Today marks a new training cycle for me...

Welcome back. What is your goal race?

From Britta on Tue, Feb 26, 2013 at 17:04:44 from 99.113.167.238

Running a half marathon called Fontana here in So. Cal the first weekend in June. It is a down hill course. Similar to Hobble creek. Ran it in 1:32:?? last year, going for under 1:30 this year but secretly want to beat my husbands time of 1:28:?? Regretting that I didn't register for the Ogden full. I always say I want to run it and never register.

From Kam on Tue, Feb 26, 2013 at 17:27:43 from 68.66.163.179

The secret is out. That's a legit goal. You keep getting faster, so why not? I ran Ogden in 2009 and 2010. It's a nice marathon, but don't be fooled into thinking the course is all that favorable. The slog around the lake is non-stop rollers for nearly 11 miles. Both years, I was so thrashed, I couldn't even make good use of the downhill from 18-23. Which marathon have you enjoyed the most? Probably SG...

From Britta on Tue, Feb 26, 2013 at 17:30:03 from 99.113.167.238

SG for sure is my favorite but I also really like Santa Barbara. Do you have favorite?

From Britta on Tue, Feb 26, 2013 at 17:32:00 from 99.113.167.238

Oh and I say it is a secret but I have been taunting my husband since we had our 4th child that I was going to beat his half time! :) I am in awe that you and your wife have 7 children. Amazing! Everyone here in so cal thinks we are lunatics for having 4. Imagine what they would think of you.:)

From Kam on Tue, Feb 26, 2013 at 17:35:31 from 68.66.163.179

Oh, I think we are considered lunatics, and how. But they are great kids. My oldest goes on a mission this year, and the little one turns 2 in July. Never a dull moment, and when the weather is nice, I can usually find a running buddy to come along on a bike.

On the trail this morning I was thinking about times I've listened to those kinds of feelings while on a run. You're a wise mom to not second-guess yourself.

From Britta on Mon, Mar 04, 2013 at 16:10:14 from 99.113.167.238

From Burt on Tue, Mar 12, 2013 at 15:44:11 from 71.216.109.214

I'm actually not allowed to say those things at home. Sometimes they slip. It's so hard not to tell my kids that their lost shoes are up their butts.

From Kam on Tue, Mar 12, 2013 at 16:34:10 from 68.66.163.179

The thing that's good about 'your' is they're/their/their is only a couple ways you can mess it up. (your butt and around the corner)

From Burt on Tue, Mar 12, 2013 at 16:38:20 from 71.216.109.214

We run a loop around a park. There is some down hill and some up hill. They don't balance each other out because there is more down than up. I feel like we are cheating but it is the most convenient place to run our repeats at. I am guessing on a track we would be 6:30-35.

During the last repeat on the up hill I couldn't get my legs to move.

Those are some fast splits! If it's a loop, how can there be more downhill than up?

From Britta on Tue, Mar 19, 2013 at 16:52:17 from 99.113.167.238

The top of the loop is slightly down while the bottom is completely flat. The two sides are both steep up and down. Think of it as a square:)

Saturday is a special day. It's the day we get ready for Sunday.

From Kam on Fri, Mar 22, 2013 at 16:38:41 from 68.66.163.179

It never works like that. Saturday is day we goof off all day, thus insuring that we won't be ready for Sunday. At least I've got 1 pm church this year...

Saturday is a day to kick the ox into the mire so we can dig it out on Sunday.

Are there any safe neighborhoods in CA?

I live in a safe neighborhood... oh wait someone was shot and killed outside my house a few weeks ago and I live near a street named Compton. :) All true!

So, you want me to be on your Ragnar team?

Right in Front of my house!! The police were looking for shell casings on my front lawn. My husband was gone Home teaching and couldn't get home cause our house was blocked off. We have interesting neighbors.... they have GOBS of $ but no one ever leaves for work. People coming and going constantly. HMMMMM? The shooting involved one of them.

This run was HORRIBLE!!!!

We ran Masters and I let it get the better of me today. I made it up half way then started walking. About 30 seconds into my walk I made myself turn around and go back to where I started walking and run to the top. I sorta redeemed myself but still a little bugged I gave in in the first place.

My legs were on fire the entire run and my heart couldn't beat fast enough today. Really windy too.

Mile repeats today with Jackie...

Jackie said every time after we finished a repeat she wanted to swear and would say to herself..."Son of a B". Made me laugh because I felt the same way.

Today we worked on making our recoveries not last so long. We have a way of dragging them out. So we kept them to just walking a quarter mile after each. Seemed appropriate.

The first repeat was fine. My watch read 6:19 and Jackie's read 6:16.. we were right next to each other.

Second one HORRIBLE it was SUPER painful... we didn't rest long enough either. My watch 6:16 Jackies 6:13 again we were next to each other.

Third was fine.... I didn't look at my watch at all and told myself to just run my best. My watch 6:26 Jackies 6:21. She wasn't that far ahead of me so I am counting it as 6:23

4th hard but ok... again didn't really look at watch told myself to run as relaxed and strong as I could. My watch 6:27 Jackies 6:19 we finished at the same time though.

So I will just average my times with Jackie's watch since we ran side by side for each repeat except for the 3rd.

6:18, 6:15, 6:23, 6:23

Was going for 6:20-6:25

Should have taken the first two a touch slower and maybe could have averaged each at 6:20.

Glad it is over... mile repeats are my least favorite speedwork out.

Now off to finish painting my girls room.... tedious work with a two yr old helper. Wish me luck!

Do you complete your repeats on a track or road? Those are nice times. It's so easy to let the recovery phase ssssttttrreeetttttcccccchhhhhhh out. Sry abt tht.

From Britta on Wed, May 01, 2013 at 14:11:20 from 99.107.166.81

On the road. We run around a park. It ends up being a square. I imagine if we were on a track they would be closer to 6:25. There is some down hill in the begining and up hill at the end. Not sure if it all evens out in the end.

From Kam on Wed, May 01, 2013 at 14:14:57 from 68.66.163.179

I would say it all evens out. I have a paved trail that's mostly straight and dead flat, including mile markers every half mile. It's great for 1-3 mile repeats. I think your timing differences are probably due to button pushing discrepancies. Even if you take the higher numbers, those are top shelf miles. Nice job.

Last year I ran this race in 1:32... this year I really wanted to run under 1:30. Forecast for today was 97 so I knew that running 1:30 was a stretch considering the race didn't start till 7:30.

The first 4 miles were fine. There was a lot of shade and I was feeling good.

6:51, 6:45, 6:52, 6:54

Miles 6 and 7 there was NO SHADE and it was soooo HOT already.

7:02, 7:15

Started realizing that sub 1:30 wasn't going to happen. I was OK with it. I had prepared myself for this possibility because of the weather. Some things you just can't control. I had been drinking 2 glasses of water at each station and dumping 2 over my head. It helped but just still so HOT!!!!

The first 6 are down a canyon but for whatever reason coming down the canyon was so HOT. Once we got out of the canyon there was a tiny breeze and the last half of the race was cooler than the first half.

Jackie told me at 6.5 she was DONE!!! I felt the same! We decided to WALK. Can you believe it?  Lots of people started passing us. I could hear a few of them snicker..... kind of like... "Oh you ran too fast down the canyon and now you can't handle it." It didn't bother me so much especially because I paid attention to who they were and passed them all up again!:)

The walk was nice and I told Jackie don't worry about it not a big deal it was too Hot and not worth it. We walked for almost a half mile.

Mile 7 10:20

Starting running again and felt tired but Ok. We just ran easy for the next couple of miles and already starting passing some of the people who passed us while we were walking.

7:43, 7:27

I started feeling like I wanted to be DONE. It was so HOT and I felt like I really had to start working for the rest of the race. There were 3 women Jackie and I kept leap frogging with. She and I would take it really easy at the water stations and take our time. They would all pass us and then before the next water station we would pass them. We got ahead of them around mile 12 and I was just hoping they wouldn't pass me again. I really felt like I had to work for the last 2 miles. Jackie was a few steps ahead of me and I had to surge a couple times to get a bit closer to her.  The last half mile you can see the finish line and it is a bit daunting. With about 200 meters to go I surged to Jackie and we started sprinting to the end. It was painful. I crossed just barely before her but knew I hadn't beaten her because she always waits to cross the start line a step behind me for situations like this..... she beat me by .02 of a second!!!!!!! We finished in the same second!!!!! We took 2 and 3rd in our age group!!!! I would have been sad if she was 3rd and I was 4th. I will have to remember at the next race that she does this and remember to cross the start after her. :)

7:31, 7:47, 7:51, 7:25

I talked to one of the ladies that we were leap frogging and she said she told her friend "Damn-it! these two girls kept walking and they still beat me!!!"  We passed a guy around mile 12 and he said to us " You girls are doing pretty good for walking so much!" I thought that was pretty funny! Jackie and I wear the same clothes to each race. We call them our "team clothes". We are dumb... but people remember us.

I am sure the picture of us crossing the finish line is GREAT we were sprinting so fast and everyone was cheering it was really fun!

My husband and kids and mom were there and it was fun for my kids to see me race. My kids were so excited  and they had been counting the women. They were so excited I was 14th.!

Last year we finished 14 and 15th. (I was 14th by 20 seconds ;) but ran 6 min faster and this year we finished 13-14th so everyone's times were considerably slower. The heat is too hard to overcome.

That sounds horrible. Is there anything worse than trying to perform in the heat? I'm really glad the snickerers and gainsayers got a good dose of come-uppance when you beat them.

Super eventful. We witnessed a crash today. I lady ran into a light pole and knocked it down in front of us. Jackie flagged down a car to call 911. We ran up on the lady and her air bags had all gone off and she had blood running down her hands. She was ok her head and face were not bleeding. We waited till the ambulance got there and then we finished our run.

I have been taking my daughter for a 1 mile run when I get back. She is having fun. Her goal is to do a 5k in the fall. :) She is 9.

I have done so poorly on speedwork for several weeks. I have either given up in the middle or just not done it. Today was the first day back.

The first two miles felt easy... I had to work for the last 4.

I wanted to average 7:30 so I'm happy with the result

Splits 7:27, 7:24, 7:22, 7:27, 7:29, 7:16

Before my bought of bad tempo's I clocked two 6 mile tempos at 6:55 average.

I wonder if the 20 degrees in temp change is the difference or if the 6:55's were just really good days for me.

Avoided being murdered at the our bathroom break at the park around mile 5. But just barely!!

Almost got hit by a car at dawn around mile 11.

The last 11 were a bit more boring. The last 7 I felt great!!! I kept keeping myself busy with thinking of new thing to talk about with Jackie so we wouldn't think about the miles.

Finished our last mile off at 7:36. It always feels nice to finish strong.

Took half a gu at miles 7 and 18. Drank more gatorade than water cause I had a hard time getting the gu's down today.

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesCrosstraining milesTotal Miles
0.0026.200.000.000.0026.20

So Happy!!!!!! My goal for the race was 3:15 and I would have accepted anything below 3:20. I am so happy with my time and so happy with my effort. I can't say much of the race was "easy" but I had so many miles that I felt strong! I PR'd by 10 min!:)

It was very cold this morning. It took about 6 miles for my feet to defrost. I felt like I was running on bricks till they warmed up.

1-7 I was cold and the pace felt OK I got to the 10k averaging 7:18. My husband was at the bottom of veyo with water in squirt bottles. He ran alongside Jackie and I while we drank so we didn't have to stop. That was so helpful. I ate 5 stingers just before we saw him and used my inhaler just after.

7:26, 7:22, 7:19, 7:16, 7:20, 7:10, 7:13

8-12 We made it up veyo strong. My breathing wasn't too labored. My legs were tired but that is to be expected. I high fived jackie when we made it too the top. This was the first of a few mental markers I had set for myself to make it through. The next mental marker was to make it through to mile 12. Jackie dropped back a couple times through these miles but I would call back to her to "come on" and she would close the gap each time. I started feeling worried because these miles are hard with the uphill and I was just tired.

7:39, 7:46, 7:36, 7:55, 7:40

13-19 I lost Jackie at the 13 mile water stop. I was sad to not have her there and I hoped she would still have a strong race that she would be proud of. I took 5 more stingers just before the water stop at 13 and used my inhaler again. My lungs were getting tired. 14-16 are my favorite part of the race. They are beautiful miles and the down hill here feels so good because my legs were not too hammered yet. Courtney Meldrum met me at 16 to run with me. I started crying when I saw her. I was happy she was there to help. 16-19 were rough miles for me so no matter what Courtney said to me I felt mad at her. She made me stop at 18 too get a good puff on my inhaler. That helped sooooo much and then my knee on my right leg started tightening so I stopped at 19 to get icy hot rubbed on me. It felt soooo good when the young guy was rubbing it on my leg that I think I was a little emmbarrising the way I was holding onto his shoulders and groaning. Hehehe! Some where in here Courtney also gave me 2 ibuprophen which I didn't want to take but oh my gosh! They were magic!!!! I also ate 5 more stingers just before 18.

7:31, 7:28, 7:00, 7:02, 7:28, 8:03, 8:09

20-26.2 I felt so strong!!!!!! Courtney kept picking people in front of me to pick off. Everytime I would say I can't catch them and then I would follow it with "I can". I passed each person she told me too. :) I yelled her name several times through out these miles like it was a swear word. It felt so good to yell at her and she understood. My husband joined us at mile 22. It was so fun too have him there too. He said all the right things and I could see how proud of me he was. That kept me going more than anything else. 24-26 were so hard but I kept strong. I kept talking to myself out loud which is so nerdy. I kept saying "You are strong, your mind is in control of your body!" I realized that no matter how many times Courtney and Jon said that too me it wouldn't have matter if I didn't believe it myself.

SOOO happy Courtney was there and so happy to have my husband there. Love them both!!!!

7:30, 7:26, 7:18, 7:28, 7:18, 7:34, 7:27, 1.36

Today was my 10th marathon. My first marathon was 4:51:??. I am so happy with how far I have come. I have learned so much through trial and error. Today was such a nice pay off!!!!! :)
